HISTORY OF black walnut Inn

Welcome to the Black Walnut Inn, a historic gem nestled at 1184 North Pleasant Street in the charming village of North Amherst, Massachusetts. Our inn is more than just a place to stay; it is a place where history and hospitality intertwine to create a truly memorable experience.

A Legacy rooted in History

The story of the Black Walnut Inn begins in 1801, when David Cowls, a respected farmer and community leader, purchased this land for his son, Joseph Cowls. Under Joseph’s care, the farm flourished. Between 1820 and 1830, the stately brick dwelling that now serves as the heart of the inn was constructed. With its Federal-style architecture enhanced by Greek Revival features, including granite lintels, a hip roof, and an elegant fanlight above the central doors, the home stood as a testament to the craftsmanship of the era.

As the property expanded in the mid-19th century, a connected barn was built between 1865 and 1880. This barn, featuring intricate Stick Style detailing and a distinctive cupola, remains one of the property’s most striking architectural elements. Together, these structures encapsulate the beauty and character of 19th-century New England design.

From Farm to Inn

For much of its history, this property served as a working farm, emblematic of the vibrant agricultural heritage in Amherst. It housed livestock such as oxen, cows, and horses, and was renowned for its production of tobacco and onions. The farm remained in the stewardship of the Cowls family for several generations, with Clinton J. Cowls and his son Almon continuing the agricultural legacy well into the 19th century.

The farm eventually transitioned to residential use and welcomed new families, including the Stetsons and Andersons. Clara Louise Stetson Anderson operated a charming gift shop within the home while raising her family here. By 1990, the property took on a new life as the Black Walnut Inn, blending its rich past with the comforts and elegance of modern hospitality.

Preserving the Past

The Black Walnut Inn is proud to be part of the North Amherst Center National Register District, a designation that honors its architectural and historical significance. The property retains much of its original character, from the hand-laid brickwork and granite foundation to the slate-shingled roofs and connected outbuildings. While modern updates have ensured the comfort and convenience of our guests, we have taken great care to preserve the timeless charm that makes this inn so special.
